Bottle, Please Show Me to The Right Path

2023
Performance

This performance piece is one of four works that are part of an ongoing project titled Pseudo Mappinga project that reads the city through the act of walking, emphasizing the sensory perception of the human body in relation to its surroundings. Each work within this project employs a different approach, location, and mode of presentation, aiming to offer diverse perspectives in interpreting the city in detail.

In this work, a bottle is used as a guiding tool to determine the direction of the next destination at every intersection encountered. Unexpectedly, over the course of approximately one hour, the bottle gradually maps out detailed points across the village area—revealing various possibilities of life and organically unfolding spatial and social experiences.

The Amstardam village was chosen for its unique and dynamic spatial layout—an organic, unstructured blend of built environments. The houses stand side by side, even intertwining in diverse patterns, blurring the boundaries between public and private spaces. Much like other Kampung in Jakarta, the streets here are narrow, passable only by foot or motorcycles. From a conventional map’s perspective, these streets resemble a labyrinth, with countless routes that seem nearly unreachable. At times, these paths transform into shared spaces where children play, teenagers gather, and mothers cook. The way the space is laid out and how people live in it really challenges the way we think about and experience urban areas.
