Awkward Objects

Video Performance

Awkward Objects is a two-channel video work featuring found objects and the human body reenacting those objects in various positions across different locations in the city of Berlin. Layered with overlapping urban sounds that shift with each transition, each channel presents both close-up and wide shots of the objects, revealing their details as well as the landscapes in which they exist.

During my two-month residency in Berlin, I became interested in the objects lying around and often overlooked in many corners of the city. Among the many items I encountered, mattresses and rolling office chairs stood out to me the most. First, because they were the most commonly found objects scattered throughout various parts of Berlin. Second, because both the mattress and the rolling chair share a connection to the domestic and work environments in today’s digital/remote work era.

When these two objects move from the domestic sphere into public space, they seem to become misplaced from their surroundings—a sense of alienation that might dissolve if someone chooses to adopt them once again. As an artist who works with the body, I attempt to reenact these discarded objects in the locations where they were once found, in order to embody and experience their awkwardness within the environment.
