“Manusia Rumput” consists of five series of figurative photographs featuring human-like beings cloaked in grass standing still within the landscapes of farmland and housing developments in Leuwinanggung, West Java. This fictional figure is imagined as a future myth—a witness to all the memories of grass, soil, and farmers, at a time when the chance to live may no longer exist due to the continued expansion of the housing development industry.

This work is part of an ongoing project titled Grass Routes, which seeks to retrace memories, reflect on current issues, and speculate on the future of the land in Leuwinanggung, West Java, in the face of the intensifying presence of the housing development industry—due to the development of the Indonesia’s first major highway.
