Facing The Others / Meraut Dalam yang Lain

2019
Video Performance, Installation

Facing The Others is a performance work that I have done for almost a year. During that period I borrowed 154 other people’s clothing that has different cultural, gender, social and functional characteristics. The various clothes were worn on my body in front of a mirror and then photographed using a camera on my device. The idea of this work departs from my curiosity about what would happen if the clothes representing various identities are placed in a foreign body, my own body. Will it create a new identity or just the opposite? Experiments to answer that question I do by simulating it every week during that period. The interesting thing about the simulation process is when my body tries to negotiate with other people’s clothes that have different cultural, gender and shapes characteristics. The negotiation process are  sometimes go smoothly sometimes not. Often the body feels confined to an unfamiliar body in its efforts to wear these clothes. This work presented in the form of a stop motion video consisting of photographs arranged chronologically for one year and some photos printed digitally on the mirror.
